Job Description

The Johnson County Park and Recreation District (JCPRD) is hiring a Seasonal/Part-Time Trail Builder to assist in building and maintaining the dirt singletrack within the district.  JCPRD is committed to maintaining and building quality singletrack, and progressive trails.

  • The Seasonal/Part-Time Trail Builder position will play a critical role in the maintenance of the current 50+ miles of singletrack, and new builds throughout the district.
  •  The Seasonal Trail Builder position assists the Crew Leader.
  • Work will be performed at Johnson County Parks throughout the district.
  • Duties and work projects are performed under the direction of the Trail Crew Leader with oversight by the Trail Manger.
  • Pay based on experience: Starting Pay $16 or Based on Experience.
  • Work Duties also include (but not limited to):  Assisting Crew Leads in design of new trail/re-routes/expansions.  

      • Hand building trail when machines are not feasible.  Maintaining current singletrack by de-berming, de-rocking, small root removal, string trimming, corridor clearing, etc.  Moving of tools/equipment between projects for staging.  Assisting Urban Trail Co. with volunteer support and assistance.  Other duties as assigned.
      • Age Requirements: Minimum age 18.
  • Normal Work Hours:  7:00am – 3:30pm M-F (Flexible and weather dependent), heavy focus time for March – October.  (Maximum of 1000 hours/year)

Duties and responsibilities, as required by business necessity may be added, deleted or changed at any time at the discretion of management, formally or informally, either verbally or in writing.  Scheduling and shift assignments and work location may be changed at any time, as required by business necessity.

Job Requirements

  • Experience is preferred but not required.

Preferred Experience:

  • At least 1 year of building sustainable singletrack.
  • Ability to use hand tools associated with trail building, operate string trimmers and chainsaws, plate compactors, etc.
  • Experience with machinery, specifically mini skid steer and mini excavator, or ability learn.
  • Carpentry, Welding or General construction background a plus.
  • Must have high school diploma or equivalent and an interest in trail building with preference given to individuals with advanced work in the field.
  • Must have valid driver's license and have a good driving record verified through a background check.
  • Ability to work outdoors and tolerate the climate and conditions of our region.

JCPRD requires reference/background screening for all positions.  Specified criteria may vary by Department.
