Job Description

 

Background about our band: The Roeland Park NHB began with a grant written by the UMKC music department. Our chapter is unique in that it is intergenerational, includes music students from UMKC and is open to all ages. JCPRD manages the finances, promotion, and provides space for the band to practice and store equipment. The band performs at least twice a session.

 

Position Description: Provide music instruction for all beginning band participants age 50 and older and facilitate inclusion of new band members in the larger New Horizons Band as comfort level necessitates. Support the philosophy of the New Horizons Band, member group of New Horizons International Music Association (NHIMA). Serve as substitute band director as needed. Coordinate break out chamber music groups and conducting responsibilities of summer band with band director. Assist with rehearsal logistics and administrative work. Tuesday evening availability required.

  • In addition, the assistant will need to assist the Director with some administrative responsibilities; help on concert dates with set-up, clean-up; and be available to answer questions.
  • Support the Band Director in daily rehearsal instruction and long-term program planning.
  • Lead sectional rehearsals and assist with full ensemble rehearsals.
  • Help coordinate logistics for performances, trips, and competitions.
  • Assist with maintaining and organizing instruments, uniforms, and sheet music.
  • Engage with 50 Plus Recreation Coordinator for ordering concert music, concert setup, flyers and programs.

Job Requirements

Experience:

  • Prior experience teaching music or working in a band program
  • Performance experience with wind, brass, percussion, and/or marching ensembles.

Skills and Knowledge:

  • Proficiency in conducting and directing ensembles.
  • Strong knowledge of instrumental pedagogy across multiple instruments.
  • Ability to assist in organizing and leading concert band activities.
  • Skills in music arranging (a plus).

JCPRD requires reference/background screening for all positions.  Specified criteria may vary by Department.
