Job Description

Part-time Swim Lesson Instructors will ensure the class safety of participants while providing a fun swimming class environment at the indoor aquatic facility located at the Shawnee Mission School District Aquatic Center.   

  • Teach swim lesson classes as scheduled
  • Provide a fun swim lesson experience for participants and parents.
  • Observe and enforce all rules and regulations of the facility to prevent accidents or emergency situations.
  • Educate class participants on the rules and regulations of the facility
  • Provide exemplary customer service ensuring the best swim lesson experience for students and parents
  • Demonstrate strong interpersonal skills including communication skills with students, parents, and facility staff.
  • Attend all training sessions and any additional staff meetings.
  • Complete all appropriate lesson paperwork during shift.

Physical, Environmental, and Special Working Conditions:

  • The work is typically performed in a pool environment, or office where the employee may be exposed to noise, dust, dirt, grease, machinery, moving parts, contagious or infectious diseases, irritating chemicals, and cold or inclement weather. The work requires the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, or gloves.       
  • Location:  Shawnee Mission School District Aquatic Center.
  • Compensated training for pieces of training. Paid ongoing training.
  • Eligible for paid time off and employee discounts.
  • Year-round positions are available.

Duties and responsibilities, as required by business necessity may be added, deleted or changed at any time at the discretion of management, formally or informally, either verbally or in writing.  Scheduling and shift assignments and work location may be changed at any time, as required by business necessity.

Job Requirements

  • Minimum age 16 years old and older
  • Completion of JCPRD’s swimming lesson training course
  • American Red Cross First aid & CPR Certification required
  • Strong communication and customer service skills along with the ability to work with all ages.
  • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions
  • Ability to maintain good physical condition, as well as professional work-related practices – alertness, dependability, and courteousness
  • Pass Lifeguard pre-employment practical in-water skills test.

Preferred Job Requirements:

  • American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification. If not currently certified, compensated for attending Lifeguard Certification Course through JCPRD. 
  • Additional pay earned per hour for lifeguard certified swim instructors.  

JCPRD requires reference/background screening for all positions.  Specified criteria may vary by Department.
